Johnny Manziel’s life has never been short on twists, turns, or headlines. And now, the former Cleveland Browns No. 1 overall pick is trading his cleats for boxing gloves.
It’s been a decade since “Johnny Football” took the college football world by storm. In 2012, the Texas A&M freshman didn’t just play well—he rewrote history. Manziel became the first freshman ever to win the Heisman Trophy, while also earning All-American honors and SEC Offensive Player of the Year. His sophomore season was just as electric: completing nearly 70% of his passes for over 4,100 yards, adding 759 yards on the ground, and accounting for 46 total touchdowns. At just 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, he was a human highlight reel.
That success carried him to the 2014 NFL Draft, where the Cleveland Browns selected him 22nd overall. But the NFL proved to be a different game. A whirlwind of partying, lack of preparation, and off-field issues—including domestic violence allegations in 2016—cut his pro football career short after just two seasons.
Since then, Manziel has bounced around leagues like the CFL, the AAF, and even Fan Controlled Football, but none of them could recapture the magic—or the money—of his college glory days. He’s pivoted to life off the field, owning a bar, hosting a podcast, and dabbling in reality TV.
Now, he’s stepping back into the spotlight, but not on a football field. According to ESPN’s Andreas Hale, Manziel will fight influencer Bob Menery on May 23 inside the UFC Apex. The event is promoted by Kick streamer Adin Ross’ Brand Risk Promotions, which specializes in matching celebrities against content creators in boxing matches.
UFC CEO Dana White has reportedly taken a keen interest in the bout, largely due to his ongoing beef with Menery. While this may seem like a one-off spectacle, in the age of Jake Paul turning boxing into a crossover phenomenon, Manziel’s latest chapter might just be the most unpredictable yet.
