Mother Nature had other plans for the John Carroll Catholic High softball team on Tuesday. The Rams' Class 2A-Region 4 semifinal showdown against Cardinal Newman was postponed due to rain at Pam Drawdy Field in Fort Pierce, putting their regional tournament hopes on hold—at least for now.
When play was halted in the top of the second inning, John Carroll held a promising 2-0 lead. The game is tentatively scheduled to resume Wednesday at 11 a.m., giving both teams a chance to regroup and refocus.
The fifth-seeded Rams (13-8) came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning. After holding the Crusaders scoreless in the top half, John Carroll's offense wasted no time. With one out, Samantha Rychter singled to right, setting the stage for a rally. Makayla Ortiz reached on a fielder's choice error, and Isabella Sanchez loaded the bases with another fielder's choice bunt. Cristina LeSchander drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center, and Victoria O'Brien followed with a run-scoring single past first base to make it 2-0.
On the mound, Ortiz showed poise under pressure. After a leadoff error put Reese Khanna on second base, Ortiz worked out of the early jam, striking out the next two batters to keep Cardinal Newman off the board.
The game was stopped with Maggie Horner at first base after a walk and no outs in the top of the second. Izzy Luna had a 1-0 count when the lightning meter sounded, and the rain quickly made the field unplayable.
Both teams earned their spots here through impressive quarterfinal wins. Eighth-seeded Cardinal Newman (13-7) stunned top-seed Miami Florida Christian with a 13-3 victory, while the Rams blanked fourth-seeded Miami Palmer Christian 7-0 in the opening round. The winner of this suspended game will hit the road Thursday for the regional final against either No. 2 Oxbridge Academy or No. 3 King's Academy.
For now, it's a waiting game—and a test of patience and preparation as these young athletes keep their eyes on the prize.
