John Blackwell is facing a career-defining choice: declare for the 2026 NBA Draft or return to college basketball. If he opts for the latter, he's made it crystal clear what he wants to accomplish with the Duke Blue Devils.
After transferring from Wisconsin this offseason, Blackwell has one goal in mind—and it's the biggest prize in the sport.
"That's the reason I picked Duke," Blackwell told Andy Katz at the NBA Combine. "Because of the roster and because of who's coming back. Just the guys that are around. I think we have a special chance to go get a national championship. That's what you play for. That's what you come back to college for, to go compete for a national championship."
It's a statement that resonates with any college hoops fan. For Blackwell, the allure isn't just wearing the iconic Duke jersey—it's about etching his name in history alongside the program's legends. The Blue Devils haven't cut down the nets since 2015, and Blackwell sees himself as a key piece to ending that drought.
And he has the game to back it up. During his standout season with the Badgers, Blackwell averaged 19.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. Those numbers would make him an immediate starter for head coach Jon Scheyer, slotting into a backcourt that's shaping up to be one of the deepest in the country.
Joining returners Cayden Boozer and Caleb Foster, along with incoming freshmen Deron Rippey Jr. and Bryson Howard, Blackwell would give Duke a backcourt that blends experience, scoring punch, and raw talent. It's the kind of roster that makes you believe a championship run isn't just possible—it's expected.
Of course, the decision ultimately rests with Blackwell. But if he chooses to suit up for the Blue Devils next season, he's not just coming back for another year of college ball. He's coming back to win it all. And at Duke, that's exactly the kind of ambition that fits the program's DNA.
