Before the first pitch against the Washington Nationals on Thursday, Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Joey Bart had a unique accessory that caught everyone's eye. It wasn't a new piece of gear or a fashion choice—it was a pink sleeve on his right arm, and it carried a special message for one of his teammates.
The sleeve was part of a heartwarming gender reveal for starting pitcher Braxton Ashcraft and his wife, Cassidy. Bart, stepping out of his comfort zone, wore the pink sleeve to signal to the Ashcraft families in the stands that they are expecting a baby girl. It's a perfect example of the tight-knit camaraderie that defines a successful clubhouse.
"It was cool," Bart said of his role in the surprise. "He was like, 'Hey, whoever’s catching that day, I need something.' And I was like, 'Only for you, man. I’ll do it for you.' I’m not a super flashy guy, but obviously that situation trumps everything, and I’m just happy for him."
In the grind of a long MLB season, moments like these remind us that baseball is about more than just wins and losses—it's about family and celebrating life's biggest moments together, right on the field.
