The New York Giants made a major statement in the 2026 NFL Draft, selecting dynamic linebacker Arvell Reese with the fifth overall pick. The former Ohio State standout joins an already formidable defensive unit, and General Manager Joe Schoen recently shared insight into how defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson plans to deploy the rookie.

Standing at an imposing 6-foot-4 and 243 pounds, Reese brings a rare combination of size, speed, and versatility. During his three seasons with the Buckeyes, he showcased the ability to dominate both as an inside linebacker and edge rusher, recording 112 total tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and 7.0 sacks. It's no surprise he was widely regarded as the top defensive prospect in the draft.

"Coach mentioned it in our press conference the other night, just position-less defense," Schoen explained. "We see him as an off-ball linebacker. He'll be playing next to Tremaine off the ball, and obviously, the versatility he has from what you saw on the college field—being able to play some edge, being able to rush, blitz, and some of the cover stuff."

The vision is clear: Reese will line up as the WILL linebacker alongside veteran Tremaine Edmunds, a two-time Pro Bowler entering his eighth NFL season. The pairing creates a formidable middle of the field—both stand 6-foot-4 with exceptional length, making passing windows tight for opposing quarterbacks.

"You talk about the size that he and Tremaine give us in the middle of the field," Schoen added. "Just think about guys throwing between two 6-foot-4 linebackers with really good length. It should be fun to see."

For Reese, learning from a seasoned veteran like Edmunds could accelerate his development significantly. The rookie will get his first chance to showcase his talents during the Giants' rookie minicamp this weekend, giving fans an early glimpse of what promises to be a bright future in New York's defense.
