Joe Pyfer is fired up—and he's not afraid to show it. The Philadelphia-born middleweight is making it crystal clear: if he's not headlining or co-headlining UFC's return to his hometown, he doesn't want to be on the card at all.
UFC 330 is set to land at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia on August 15, marking the promotion's long-awaited return to the City of Brotherly Love. For Pyfer (16-3), who trains at Balance Studios in Philly and has deep roots in the local fight scene, this should be a dream homecoming. Coming off a massive main event win over Israel Adesanya at UFC Seattle, "Bodybagz" feels he's earned the right to be the face of the night in his own backyard.
But here's the rub: rumors are swirling that the main event could feature Islam Makhachev defending his welterweight title against Ian Garry. That has Pyfer seeing red—and not just because he'd be bumped down the card. "I'm pissed," Pyfer told Ariel Helwani. "I should be the main event of Philly. I have no interest if I'm not the main event."
He's willing to compromise—sort of. "I would do the co-main. That makes sense maybe," he added, acknowledging that numbered UFC events typically revolve around title fights. But the silence from the UFC brass with just two months to go has him frustrated. "Where I train, where I come from, I think I should be the main event at Philly. We have so many Philly fighters, and you got potentially a Russian and Irish dude. Don't make sense to me."
For a fighter who just toppled one of the sport's biggest names, Pyfer's frustration is understandable. Whether the UFC listens to its hometown hero—or books him elsewhere—remains to be seen. But one thing's for sure: Joe Pyfer isn't backing down from this fight, even if it's not inside the Octagon.
