Joe Cole has thrown his support behind Cole Palmer for a last-minute World Cup spot, but we're not so sure the Chelsea star deserves it.
Once seen as England's potential key player for the tournament, Palmer's form has taken a serious dip. After a mediocre six months, he's followed it up with another six months of poor performances. Even an injury layoff didn't help reset his momentum—since returning to the team at the start of the year, there's been little improvement.
Cole, speaking to The Sun, argued that Palmer's unique qualities make him worth a spot in a 26-man squad. "You have to find a space for Cole Palmer on the plane," he said. "If he doesn't start, he can open games up. He can do things that others can't, and we've seen that penalty shoot-out personality. He's not at his best, and other players are playing really well, but there's no reason not to bring him. It's the first test he's faced. He's a great player. He's already achieved greatness in his career."
While Cole's loyalty is understandable—he's a Chelsea legend after all—the numbers don't lie. Palmer's slump has been glaring, and in a World Cup year, every spot counts. His best hope might be the equally poor form of rivals like Morgan Rogers and the injury to James Maddison, which could open the door. But relying on others' misfortunes isn't a solid strategy for a player of his caliber.
In other Chelsea news, Cole has also recommended the club raid relegated teams for Premier League-experienced talent, naming seven potential signings. Meanwhile, young star Estevao's World Cup dreams appear dashed after a brutal injury update.
As the tournament approaches, Palmer's fate remains uncertain. Will he rediscover his form in time, or will England leave him behind? For now, the debate rages on.
