ESPN is set to make history with its first-ever Super Bowl broadcast at the conclusion of the 2026 NFL season, and the network's legendary announcing duo of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will have the final word on what promises to be an unforgettable campaign.
On Tuesday, May 12, Buck revealed where he and Aikman will kick off their fifth season together on "Monday Night Football": a high-stakes AFC West showdown between the reigning division champion Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs. The game is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 14, at 8:15 p.m.
"You always wonder how you're going to start the season," Buck said on ABC's "Good Morning America." "And our answer is a game between Denver and Kansas City. It's a great matchup in the AFC West."
Interestingly, the game's location remains undetermined as the NFL finalizes the full schedule ahead of Thursday night's official release at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and NFL Network. ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed that the league is still working on the details, with the venue for the Broncos-Chiefs clash expected to be announced alongside the schedule.
This opening matchup carries extra weight after Denver ended Kansas City's remarkable nine-year reign as AFC West champions in 2025. The Broncos posted a stellar 14-3 regular-season record, securing the conference's top seed. However, their playoff run was derailed when quarterback Bo Nix suffered a broken ankle during an overtime victory over the Buffalo Bills, forcing him to miss the AFC title game against the New England Patriots—a 10-7 loss that sent the Patriots to the Super Bowl.
Fortunately for Broncos fans, Nix is on track for the season opener. Head coach Sean Payton confirmed Monday that the young signal-caller will be "full strength by training camp," according to NFL.com.
On the other side, Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes is working his way back from ACL and LCL tears in his left knee, sustained in Week 15. Chiefs GM Brett Veach reported that Mahomes is "way ahead of schedule" and targeting a Week 1 return—setting the stage for a potential blockbuster duel between two elite quarterbacks.
