Joao Fonseca has been in the spotlight since his ATP Tour debut—and for good reason. Still just 17, his early career achievements are nothing short of remarkable. But rather than being celebrated, he's often been saddled with sky-high expectations, including comparisons to none other than Roger Federer.
In a recent interview, Fonseca opened up about how those comparisons once weighed heavily on him. "At the beginning, it was real madness for me, honestly," he said. "It was something totally different." The Brazilian teen admitted the pressure from fans and media was overwhelming at first. "I felt like everyone thought I was going to become the next Roger Federer almost overnight. But things don't work like that. I was trying to understand all of that, but it was difficult."
It's an unfair burden for any player, let alone a teenager. Comparisons to Carlos Alcaraz—another generational talent—are equally unrealistic. No one should be held to that standard so early in their career.
Fortunately, Fonseca has found a healthier perspective. "Now, I think I've understood that I only play for myself, that I don't owe anything to people and that I don't play for them, but for myself," he shared. That maturity is already paying off. Currently ranked inside the ATP top 30, Fonseca has two tour-level titles and several notable wins over top-ranked players. He made his mark in 2024 and has stayed at the highest level ever since.
Jannik Sinner recently weighed in on Fonseca and fellow young gun Rafael Jodar, noting both are expected to challenge the top tier soon. But for now, Fonseca's calm composure and steady rise speak volumes about his mental strength. Many young players would have buckled under similar weight. He hasn't shown any signs of cracking. His journey is just beginning—and there's no need to rush the finish line.
