João Fonseca is making serious moves—both on and off the court. The Brazilian tennis sensation is tuning out the growing hype around him, letting his family and management team handle the business side while he focuses on building his game, one match at a time.
Currently the youngest player ranked inside the ATP Top 30, the 19-year-old enters the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome as the No. 27 seed. He kicks off his campaign today against Hamad Medjedovic, carrying momentum from a strong clay-court season. "I think right now my game is at a great level… I’m healthy… and good mentally," Fonseca shared in an exclusive interview.
But Fonseca isn't measuring success by a single win or loss. Instead, he’s focused on sustainable growth—on and off the court. Speaking with ATP staff ahead of the tournament, he reflected on how much more mature he feels compared to his first appearance in Rome last year. That maturity, he says, comes from a clear division of labor: his parents and a longtime family friend manage the business, so he can pour all his energy into improving his game.
It's a smart setup. Fonseca's father, Christiano, co-founded IP Capital Partners, a Brazilian hedge fund, while his mother, Roberta, is a former athlete. His agent, Gustavo Abreu, has been a family friend for years. Together, they form a trusted inner circle that allows Fonseca to stay locked in on the court.
One piece of advice from his father sticks with him: work hard when you're young, so you can enjoy life more later. "My dad worked his whole life in the financial market," Fonseca recalls. That lesson is clearly paying off—as he builds a portfolio not in stocks, but in points, titles, and the kind of composure that separates rising stars from the rest.
Whether he wins or loses in Rome, Fonseca is playing the long game. And for a teen with his talent and support system, the future looks bright.
