The St. Louis Cardinals stormed out of the gates and held on for a 6-4 victory over the Athletics on Tuesday night, snapping a two-game skid and showcasing the kind of early offensive firepower that's made them a force on the road this season.
Rookie sensation JJ Wetherholt provided the evening's biggest spark, launching a two-run homer to right field off Joel Kuhnel in the sixth inning to extend the Cardinals' lead to 6-3. The blast was the latest highlight for a St. Louis squad that now boasts a major league-best 14-7 road record and has yet to lose three straight away from home this year.
The Cardinals wasted no time setting the tone, plating four runs in the very first inning. Jordan Walker started the scoring with an RBI single before José Fermín cleared the bases with a double, driving in two. Yohel Pozo then capped the rally with a single to bring Fermín home.
On the mound, starter Andre Pallante (4-3) delivered a solid five-inning outing, striking out four while allowing four hits and three runs. The bullpen held firm behind him, with Riley O'Brien navigating a leadoff walk in the ninth to notch his 12th save of the season.
The Athletics refused to go quietly, answering in the second inning when Nick Kurtz delivered an RBI single to extend his remarkable on-base streak to 35 games. That run is the longest by an A's player since Jack Cust reached in 40 straight from 2008-09 and ranks as the fourth-longest for the franchise this century. Shea Langeliers added an RBI double in the same frame and later crushed a 448-foot solo homer in the eighth, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.
Jeffrey Springs (3-3) took the loss for Oakland, surrendering four runs over five innings as the A's managed just six hits. Iván Herrera collected two of St. Louis's 10 hits, with the Cardinals going 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
The series continues Wednesday, with left-hander Matthew Liberatore (2-1, 4.07 ERA) taking the mound for St. Louis against Oakland's J.T. Ginn (1-1, 3.62).
