Some endings never quite feel final. That was certainly the case for Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors after their Play-In Tournament exit against the Phoenix Suns last April. With no contract in place, rumors of a split grew louder by the day. But behind the scenes, patience won out. Now, the Warriors are gearing up for another chapter—with Coach Kerr staying on the sidelines and Stephen Curry still leading the charge.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Kerr has agreed to a new two-year deal that keeps him as the highest-paid coach in NBA history. "It makes him and keeps him the highest-paid coach in the NBA moving forward," Charania reported. He also noted that Kerr briefly considered stepping away after a legendary four-championship run over 12 seasons in Golden State.
Kerr's previous extension—a two-year, $35 million deal signed in February 2024—already set records with an annual value of $17.5 million. His new contract will surpass that figure, though exact terms remain undisclosed. But this handshake was about more than just money. It was a testament to the deep trust between both sides.
Charania added that Kerr met with Warriors owner Joe Lacob multiple times over the last three weeks, face-to-face. "The conclusion was Steve Kerr wanted to coach. Joe Lacob and the Warriors welcomed him, wanted him back," Charania said. The discussions covered everything from the team's summer direction to playing style and contract terms.
By late April, the Warriors' front office had made its stance clear: they wanted Kerr back. According to ClutchPoints' Brett Seigel, "There is not one person within the organization who wants Kerr to walk away." Lacob, general manager Mike Dunleavy, and stars like Curry and Draymond Green all voiced their support. That unified front now sets the stage for a pivotal offseason—one that could see major roster moves, including the uncertain futures of Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green.
