Jim Rutherford, the veteran architect who has guided the Canucks as President of Hockey Operations since the 2021-22 season, announced he will be stepping away from his day-to-day role following the 2026 NHL Draft. "I'm going to get away from the day-to-day operations," Rutherford shared during a media availability following the Canucks' tough 2026 Draft Lottery loss. "I'll stay with the team as an advisor and alternate governor. We're going to put together a really strong staff moving forward. This is something I've been thinking about for a couple of years, but it's time."

At 77 years old, the Hall of Fame executive isn't walking away completely. In his new advisory capacity, Rutherford will remain a valuable resource for the organization's evolving leadership team. "I'll help with the transition and work with the new people in different positions," he explained. "I'll still be part of the organization. When someone wants to bounce something off me, I'm happy to help."

Vancouver is currently deep in its search for a new General Manager, and Rutherford's transition appears designed to create a clear leadership structure for the next era. "We're still working on that with the people we have in mind," Rutherford added. "The exact structure will be clearer when we announce the new GM."
