The 77-year-old, three-time Stanley Cup winner said he’s been thinking about his future a lot recently.

Jim Rutherford, the legendary three-time Stanley Cup champion, is stepping down as president of hockey operations for the Vancouver Canucks—marking the end of an era for the franchise. The 77-year-old Hockey Hall of Famer made the announcement Wednesday, confirming his transition to an advisory role after the upcoming NHL draft.

"I'm going to get away from the day-to-day operations," Rutherford shared during an unrelated press conference. "I'm going to stay with the team as an adviser and alternate governor. But as far as the day-to-day operations, we're going to put together a really good staff here going forward."

Rutherford admitted the decision has been weighing on him for some time. "This is something I've thought about for a couple of years," he said with a hint of his trademark wit. "But it's time for me to do that. I feel bad that I have to do it at such a young age, but decided to do it anyways."

The news comes on the heels of a brutal season for the Canucks, who finished dead last in the standings with a 25-49-8 record. The team's struggles culminated in the firing of general manager Patrik Allvin on April 17, just one day after a humbling 6-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers capped their dismal campaign.

Rutherford revealed that the search for a new GM has been extensive, with more than 15 candidates initially considered. The list has now been narrowed to five finalists, and a decision is expected soon. How the front office will be restructured remains fluid, but Rutherford emphasized his commitment to a smooth transition.

"I'll help with the transition and the new person, new people, new positions, things like that," he explained. "But I'll still be part of the organization. When someone wants to bounce something off of me, I'll be happy to do it."

Rutherford's tenure in Vancouver was a rollercoaster ride. Hired as president of hockey operations and interim GM on December 9, 2021—just four days after Jim Benning was let go—he quickly set about reshaping the franchise. Alongside Allvin, he orchestrated a dramatic turnaround that saw the Canucks rise from playoff outsiders to Pacific Division champions, only to slide back down the standings in a dizzying cycle of highs and lows.

Before his time in Vancouver, Rutherford made his mark as GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2014 to 2021, guiding the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017. His legacy as a builder of championship rosters is cemented in hockey history, and now he'll bring that wisdom to an advisory capacity as the Canucks look to rebuild once again.
