This is beginning to be a big problem for the Jets.

The New York Jets entered the 2026 NFL offseason knowing they needed serious reinforcements at quarterback. After Justin Fields proved he wasn't the long-term answer, the front office made moves—trading for Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders and drafting Cade Klubnik on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft. But the plan was always to add one more veteran signal-caller to back up Smith in 2026.

That plan is now in serious jeopardy.

First, Russell Wilson began flirting with retirement and a potential TV gig. Then, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero dropped the news that veteran Tyrod Taylor is signing with the Green Bay Packers. "A new No. 2 in Green Bay," Pelissero reported. For a Jets team desperately searching for experienced quarterback depth, this is a significant blow.

With Taylor off the board, the free-agent market is looking thin. Aaron Rodgers is technically available, but he's not a realistic option for New York. Wilson may never play another down if a broadcasting job beckons. That leaves Cooper Rush—the former Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens quarterback—as the top remaining candidate. He wouldn't be an ideal fit, but he's the best of what's left.

Jimmy Garoppolo is also a free agent, but retirement rumors swirl around him as well. Teddy Bridgewater could be a possibility, though he's far from a sure thing. Beyond that, the options get even less inspiring: Easton Stick, Brett Rypien, Jeff Driskel, and John Wolford. None of those names inspire confidence for a team with playoff aspirations.

If the Jets can't convince Wilson to choose New York over a broadcast booth, and another team swoops in for Rush, and both Garoppolo and Bridgewater hang up their cleats, the Jets could be left with a quarterback room that looks dangerously thin. For a team that believes Geno Smith can lead them to "the promised land," the backup situation is becoming a major problem.
