Jessica Pegula has successfully defended her Charleston title, but the path to the trophy was anything but easy. The American star capped off a grueling week with a straight-sets victory over Yuliia Starodubtseva in the final, a welcome change of pace after battling through four consecutive three-set marathons just to reach the championship match.
In a revealing post-match interview, Pegula peeled back the curtain on the mental and physical toll of a title defense. "It's crazy," she admitted, reflecting on the victory. She challenged the romanticized notion of a perfect tournament run, highlighting the gritty reality of elite competition. "Sometimes when you win a tournament, you kind of romanticize it like it was so easy, and it's usually not. There are usually some days where it's really hard."
This year, she leveraged the memory of last season's tough battles to fuel her resilience. "I shifted my mindset a little bit... I was like, listen, last year was a really tough year. It wasn't like everything went perfect. So I think that actually kind of helped me get through a lot of really tough matches this week."
Despite the exhausting schedule, Pegula sees a major silver lining as the tour shifts to clay. She views the long, physical battles as ideal preparation for the demanding European swing. "I really do think I'd rather have it this way going into clay season for sure because you're gonna have matches like this... So I think it's honestly great for my clay court season."
With this hard-fought victory, Pegula secures her third title of the year, cementing her status as one of the WTA's most consistent and formidable competitors. Her ability to grind out wins under pressure continues to build a compelling case that a major championship breakthrough could be on the horizon.
