Runners and fans of the Jerusalem Marathon received disappointing news this week as organizers made the tough call to cancel the event's signature 42.2-kilometer full race. The decision, announced by the Jerusalem Municipality, was made solely due to anticipated adverse weather conditions, prioritizing runner safety above all else.
This cancellation comes amid significant excitement for the 15th International Jerusalem Winner Marathon, which had already been rescheduled from its original March date. The full marathon was set for Friday, but following a thorough professional assessment, authorities determined that holding the long-distance event would pose health risks. The shorter races, including the half-marathon, 10K, and 5K, will proceed but have been moved to earlier start times.
"Our responsibility is to place public health above all else," stated Prof. Naama Constantini, the marathon's accompanying physician. She emphasized that long-distance running in poor conditions can endanger even experienced athletes. All participants in the remaining races are strongly advised to pay close attention to their pre-race preparation, including maintaining proper sleep schedules ahead of the earlier starts.
Despite this setback, the spirit of the event remains strong. Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion described the marathon as a powerful reflection of the city's resilience and a return to normalcy, marking it as the first major sporting event since Operation Roaring Lion. Known globally for its breathtaking route through historic landscapes, the marathon continues to be a premier destination for elite and amateur runners alike.
The Municipality and all partnering authorities continue final preparations to ensure the other race distances are held safely. Runners and spectators should monitor the official marathon website for any further updates regarding the weekend's schedule.
