The Sioux Falls Jefferson softball team is handling the pressure of defending a state championship well, getting off to a 5-0 start in 2026.

Defending a state championship is a pressure cooker, but the Sioux Falls Jefferson Cavaliers are embracing the heat. The 2025 Class AA title holders have stormed out of the gate in 2026, improving to a perfect 5-0 with a pair of commanding wins on Friday, April 17th. This flawless start sends a clear message: the target on their backs isn't slowing them down.

The Cavaliers' success is built on a foundation of complete team balance. The offensive firepower has been staggering, plating 53 runs in five games with three contests reaching double digits. Meanwhile, the pitching duo of Tya Devericks and Makenzie Bierman has been nearly untouchable, surrendering just five total runs. This two-way dominance is the hallmark of a team built for another deep postseason run.

That perfect blend was on full display Friday. In a 5-2 victory over Eden Prairie (MN), Devericks was electric, striking out 11 batters. The offense then exploded in a 16-0 rout of St. Louis Park (MN), highlighted by Macy Bryant's incredible feat of hitting for the cycle—a single, double, triple, and home run in one game.

While the past success is a point of pride, Head Coach Ed Whiting is focused on the present. "The girls continue to build on what we've done, but we're here now and this is a new team," Whiting said. "We're playing for the 2026 season." This mindset is crucial for a program transitioning from a fourth-seeded Cinderella story to a bona fide powerhouse.

Pitching has been a cornerstone for Jefferson since softball became sanctioned in South Dakota. Even after the graduation of ace Whitney Portner, Whiting has immense confidence in his current tandem. "We had three of the top pitchers in the state," he noted, praising Bierman's talent and development. He credits both the program's pitching culture and the players' own relentless drive for their continued excellence on the mound.

That drive extends to the batter's box. Player Macy Bryant points to the team's tight-knit chemistry as a key ingredient. "We put in all the effort at practice and we have a good relationship with everybody," Bryant said, highlighting the intangible bond that fuels their potent offense.

As the hunted team, every opponent will bring their best. Coach Whiting acknowledges the challenge but believes his squad is handling the target with maturity. With a statement win over a tough Harrisburg squad already in the books and more big matchups looming, the Cavaliers are proving they have the talent, balance, and mindset to defend their crown.
