The Orlando Magic are officially on the hunt for a new head coach, and team president Jeff Weltman is keeping his cards close to the vest—just as you'd expect from a seasoned executive navigating a pivotal offseason.
Jamahl Mosley was fired Monday morning, just hours after the Magic's season came to a heartbreaking end in Detroit. Orlando had a commanding 3-1 series lead over the top-seeded Pistons in the first round of the NBA playoffs, only to drop three straight games, including a decisive Game 7 on the road. It was the third consecutive first-round exit under Mosley's five-year tenure, and with expectations rising, the front office decided it was time for a change.
Speaking at the AdventHealth Training Center, Weltman gave little away about his ideal candidate. "I don't think we look for a particular trait or a quality," he said. "Coaches come in a lot of different shapes and sizes. Someone that kind of looks at our team in the way that we feel can help move us forward. Obviously someone who understands where we are on our timeline—that we've kind of tried to get past the growth stages of the rebuild."
Weltman emphasized that the search isn't about checking boxes. "I don't have a box to say that we want the next coach to come out of this sort of box," he added. Instead, the process will be more intuitive—rooted in deep conversations and a shared vision for the roster.
"We want to talk, have really in-depth conversations with people about how they view our team, maybe see some things that we haven't seen and kind of go from there," Weltman explained.
Notably, the Magic president wouldn't even commit to whether prior NBA head coaching experience is a must. For context, Mosley himself was a longtime assistant before getting his first head coaching gig in Orlando. That willingness to bet on fresh leadership could open the door to a wide range of candidates, from seasoned veterans to rising stars in the coaching world.
As the search begins, one thing is clear: the Magic are no longer in rebuild mode. They're looking for a coach who can take a talented, young roster and turn playoff promise into postseason success.
