The 2025-26 Kentucky Wildcats' season was a story of resilience, defined by a relentless wave of injuries that ultimately derailed their campaign. Mark Pope's squad battled through adversity, but the absence of key players proved too much to overcome.
Central to that narrative was the prolonged absence of potential lottery pick Jayden Quaintance. The talented big man missed the majority of the season rehabbing a torn ACL, only to return for a brief four-game stint in January before knee swelling sidelined him for good. This extended time away from the court has had a significant impact on his NBA Draft prospects.
According to Jeremy Woo's latest ESPN draft rankings, Quaintance's stock has taken a notable hit. Once widely projected as a top-10 pick, the 6'10" forward has now slid to 20th overall. The primary concern for NBA scouts is clear: his knee's recovery timeline, which stretched over a full year, raises legitimate questions about his immediate durability and long-term health.
While Quaintance hasn't officially declared, an announcement is expected soon as Kentucky retools its roster. His decision likely hinges on his ability to prove he's fully healthy; a clean bill of health could secure him a first-round promise, making a return to college basketball unlikely.
In a contrasting development, fellow Wildcat Malachi Moreno is seeing his stock rise. Moreno, who was previously unranked, has surged all the way to 60th overall in Woo's projections, putting him squarely in second-round territory. Currently testing the draft waters, Moreno is widely expected to return to Lexington for further development.
That may be the smartest play. With another year to refine his game in a weaker projected 2026 draft class, Moreno could position himself for a substantially higher selection. Meanwhile, Otega Oweh finds himself on the fringe at 93rd overall, making it unlikely he hears his name called on draft night this year.
