LSU baseball's SEC record fell to 6-11 following back-to-back losses to Texas A&M on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers began the year ranked No. 2 in most polls and got off to a hot start over their first 10 games, but then LSU hit a wall and never recovered.
The feeling reminds some of the 2024 team, which started 3-12 in the SEC. That team came just short of advancing out of the NCAA Tournament regional rounds and head coach Jay Johnson pointed out some similarities.
"I believe on Friday and Saturday night, the two guys we roll out are going to give us a chance to win," Johnson said. "Cason [Evans] and William [Schmidt] are moving in that direction, as was obviously Luke [Holman] and Gage [Jump]. So you feel good about that.
Evans and Schmidt developed into reliable starting arms for the weekend series just as Holman and Jump did in 2024. That batting order had power but struggled to get a consistent rhythm on offense, much like the 2026 team. Lack of run support is a common theme but Johnson pointed out a difference.
"There's no Tommy White on this team," Johnson said. "There's no Jared Jones on this team. That's okay. This is actually a more complete skill set of players offensively, but we have not played like that."
