Jay Bilas talked about the infrastructure certain schools have to recruit internationally, and why international players are attracted to college.

The 2026 NCAA tournament was a global showcase, reminding everyone that basketball's brightest stars now shine from every corner of the map. ESPN analyst Jay Bilas recently emphasized this shift, pointing to international recruiting as a critical new frontier for elite college programs.

"We seem to think in the United States that it's our game, and it's not," Bilas stated. "It's the world's game." He cautioned that while the U.S. still produces a huge share of top talent, no program can afford to ignore the rest of the globe. "We have to expect we've got more of the best players than any other country in the world, but we don't have all of them."

Bilas highlighted how certain schools gain a competitive edge by building a global network. "Part of the problem in getting into international recruiting is having experience and having contacts and knowing people," he explained. He pointed to Arizona's Tommy Lloyd as a prime example, whose international recruiting prowess was honed during his long tenure as a Gonzaga assistant.

That Gonzaga pipeline, which brought players like France's Ronny Turiaf to Spokane, revolutionized how many programs scout talent. For today's elite teams, a strong international strategy isn't just an advantage—it's becoming essential to compete for championships, blending diverse styles and skills on the court.
