The Riverland Community College Blue Devils baseball team delivered a commanding performance on Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader against Minnesota West at Seltz Field. The team's dominant pitching and timely hitting secured two decisive victories, 5-1 and 9-1, further solidifying their strong season record of 20-9.
The story of the day was the masterful pitching in Game One, where Southland graduate Riley Jax took center stage. Jax was virtually untouchable, tossing a complete-game gem. He stifled the Minnesota West lineup over seven innings, surrendering just two hits and one run while striking out five batters. This kind of efficient, powerful pitching sets the tone for a winning team.
The Blue Devils' offense provided ample support, with key contributions up and down the lineup. Carson Gehrke led the charge, going 2-for-3 with two crucial doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored. Austin Swenson and Hideki Ohira also stayed hot at the plate, each collecting two hits to keep the pressure on.
Game Two showcased the depth of the RCC roster, as the team exploded for nine runs. Peyton Ransom set the pace with a 3-for-4 performance, including a double and two runs scored. The offensive outburst was a collective effort, with Rolan Figueroa driving in two runs and Christian Koehler adding two more hits and an RBI.
On the mound, the pitching staff continued its excellence. Starter Melvin Ortiz earned the win with four solid innings, and reliever Kahlil Fernandez was electric out of the bullpen, striking out five batters over two scoreless frames to slam the door shut. This doubleheader sweep is a testament to the Blue Devils' balanced attack and formidable presence on the field.
