Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has stunningly stepped down as manager of the MLS club, just months removed from winning the 2025 MLS Cup title. In the club’s announcement of the move, Mascherano said he was stepping down for “personal reasons,” though later on the announcement specifies that the staff that was hired along with him in late 2024 will also be departing the club. Inter Miami said sporting director Guillermo Hoyos will take over as head coach on an interim basis, with chief soccer officer Alberto Marrero moving into Hoyos’ old job.

In a stunning turn of events, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has resigned from his position, a mere few months after leading the club to its historic 2025 MLS Cup victory. The sudden departure sends shockwaves through Major League Soccer as the team begins its title defense.

The club's official announcement cited "personal reasons" for Mascherano's exit. Notably, his entire coaching staff, hired alongside him in late 2024, will also be departing. In the immediate wake of the news, sporting director Guillermo Hoyos has been named interim head coach, while chief soccer officer Alberto Marrero will assume Hoyos's former role.

Mascherano's appointment before the 2025 season was a bold gamble, given his limited senior coaching experience. However, the former Argentina international, reuniting with his legendary Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, silenced all doubters by masterminding a championship run that culminated in an MLS Cup final win over the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The 2026 campaign, however, has presented new challenges for the reigning champions. While holding a respectable league record, the team has drawn its first two matches at the sparkling new Nu Stadium and suffered a significant early exit from the Concacaf Champions Cup. Mascherano also faced a reshaped squad following the retirements of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba and the integration of new signings like Germán Berterame.

In a farewell statement, Mascherano expressed his gratitude: "First and foremost, I would like to thank the club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organization for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments. I will always carry with me the memory of our first star."

The search for a permanent successor begins immediately, as Inter Miami looks to build upon its championship foundation in this new, unexpected chapter.
