Tight Scheduling Puts Selectors In A Fix Ahead Of Next International Commitment Six Days After IPL

The countdown to India's one-off Test against Afghanistan in Chandigarh on June 6 has put the national selectors in a tight spot, especially when it comes to managing the workload of their premier fast bowlers. With the IPL final scheduled just six days earlier on May 31, the selectors face a delicate balancing act between fielding a strong XI and ensuring their pace attack isn't overworked.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a crucial meeting with the selectors over the weekend or early next week to map out the roadmap for the coming months. Despite the Afghanistan Test falling outside the World Test Championship cycle, the team management has made it clear they want to put their best foot forward in every match. India are scheduled to play nine Tests in the WTC over the next nine months, making player management even more critical.

The biggest question mark hovers over the pace-bowling contingent. As of now, only Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians have been eliminated from IPL playoff contention. Jasprit Bumrah, the sole Test regular from these two teams, has long been a subject of workload concerns. His fitness and availability are always a sensitive topic for the think tank.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna are key cogs in Gujarat Titans' playoff push, which could extend into the last week of May. Akash Deep continues to recover from a lower-back injury and isn't expected to be fit soon, while Harshit Rana is unlikely to be ready before the third week of June. The selectors have also signaled that they've moved on from Mohammed Shami, making a recall for this one-off Test highly unlikely.

To build depth, the BCCI has asked its targeted fast-bowling pool to ramp up their workload during the remaining IPL matches. Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar, both part of India 'A' setups over the past year, are being monitored closely. With the Test squad announcement looming, all eyes are on how the selectors navigate this scheduling squeeze—and whether they'll lean on experience or look to the future.
