Hockey Canada is turning to a rising star in the front office world for the upcoming IIHF World Championship. Pittsburgh Penguins assistant general manager Jason Spezza has been named to Canada's management group, joining recently departed Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving. The duo will be supported by Penguins GM Kyle Dubas, a long-time Hockey Canada favorite who was also part of the management team for Canada's silver-medal-winning squad at the 2026 Olympics.
While Treliving brings veteran experience, Spezza's rapid ascent is the compelling storyline. The 42-year-old concluded a distinguished 19-year NHL playing career with the Maple Leafs in 2022 and immediately transitioned into management. He began as a special advisor to then-Toronto GM Kyle Dubas, quickly becoming a trusted lieutenant. When Dubas moved to Pittsburgh, Spezza followed, earning a promotion to Assistant GM—a role he has held for the past three seasons.
Spezza's impact has been significant. He also serves as GM for the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, overseeing a major turnaround for Pittsburgh's top minor-league affiliate. His reputation for clear communication and effective management is gaining league-wide recognition. In a recent poll of NHL agents conducted by The Athletic, the Penguins' front office—with Spezza highlighted by name—finished third in the "easiest front office to deal with" category.
"They communicate to the players what they’re looking for," one agent said. "They communicate with the agents what they are doing. And that sets them up for success." This praise underscores why Spezza is now viewed as an ascending executive and a potential candidate for future GM openings, with his name already circulating in connection with vacancies in Toronto and New Jersey. His role with Team Canada this spring is a significant next step in his promising management career.
