In a triumphant return to the mound, Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Jared Jones is proving that patience and perseverance pay off. After undergoing elbow surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2024 season, the right-hander made a dominant rehab start for the Altoona Curve on Tuesday, striking out four batters over four scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory.
"It's been a long time," Jones reflected. "I'm just really grateful to take the mound every fifth, sixth, seventh day—or whatever I want right now. It's been a lot of fun getting back out there."
The road to recovery wasn't easy for Jones, who admitted the surgery was a tough hurdle. "Surgery sucked. I don't think any athlete wants to go through that. You do nothing for about a month until you can actually move your elbow," he said. But the downtime also offered an unexpected silver lining: time to sharpen his craft. "There's a pretty big opportunity to learn more about what you can do as a pitcher. My changeup and curveball—knock on wood—have never been this good."
When he wasn't rehabbing, Jones picked up a unique hobby: piloting a remote control boat in his pond. It was just one way he stayed engaged during his time away from the game he loves. Now, with the Pirates playing well and eyeing a potential return later this month, Jones is counting down the days until he can rejoin a winning team. "I'm really anxious to get back," he said. "We've got a winning team with really good players. So I'm counting down the days."
Jones is expected to make at least one more rehab start in Altoona before the Pirates bring him back to Pittsburgh. For fans of the game, his comeback story is a reminder that even the toughest setbacks can lead to the sweetest returns.
