When you're facing the most experienced fighter in UFC history, you know exactly what you're getting into—or so Jared Gordon believes.
As Gordon prepares to step into the Octagon against Jim Miller at UFC 328 this Saturday at Newark's Prudential Center, he's not expecting any surprises. The 36-year-old lightweight contender recognizes Miller's legendary status but isn't anticipating any new wrinkles in the 42-year-old veteran's game.
"I don't think his game plan is going to change from his other fights," Gordon told reporters at Wednesday's pre-fight press conference in Morristown, N.J. "I think he's going to come out and do what he normally does. That's what I'm expecting. He's going to come out hard. He's in Jersey, he's in Newark, his home state. I don't know how many more fights he's going to fight."
Miller's resume speaks for itself. With a staggering 46 fights under the UFC banner since his debut at UFC 89 back in October 2008, he holds the record for most appearances in the promotion's history. His longevity is a testament to his durability and skill, but Gordon (21-8 MMA, 9-7 UFC) believes that familiarity breeds opportunity.
While much has stayed the same for Miller inside the cage, his life outside it has seen challenges. In the lead-up to this bout, Miller revealed that his 14-year-old son recently overcame a battle with cancer. Gordon acknowledged the emotional weight of that story but made it clear that compassion takes a back seat once the cage door closes.
"I know he's been through some tough times recently, so he wants to get the win for his family," Gordon said. "But like I said before, that doesn't matter. On Saturday, I don't care about your family. I have my own family. I have a daughter who needs me. I'm expecting the best Jim, and I know that I'll come out on top."
Gordon's message is clear: respect the legend, but don't fear him. "Jim's a great name, legend of the sport, most UFC wins, most UFC fights," he added. "But come Saturday night, he's just another guy."
For fans of the fight game, this matchup offers a classic clash of eras—a grizzled veteran looking to add one more chapter to his storied career against a hungry contender aiming to make his own mark. And if Gordon's prediction holds true, we'll see the same Jim Miller we've always known. The question is whether that version is still enough to get the job done.
