Janelle Salaun scored 20 points and tied a career high with five 3-pointers, Veronica Burton had 16 points, and the Golden State Valkyries beat the Seattle Storm 91-80 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams. Kaitlyn Chen scored all 14 of her points in the second half and Kayla Thornton added 13 for Golden State, which led 49-41 at halftime and 69-53 after three quarters. Seven different Valkyries made a 3-pointer and the team finished 15 of 37 from distance.

SEATTLE — The Golden State Valkyries made a statement in their season opener, lighting up the scoreboard from beyond the arc and rolling past the Seattle Storm 91-80 on Friday night.

Janelle Salaun was the star of the show, pouring in 20 points while tying her career high with five 3-pointers. Veronica Burton chipped in 16 points, and the Valkyries showcased their depth with seven different players connecting from deep, finishing 15-of-37 from three-point range.

Golden State took control early, leading 49-41 at halftime before blowing the game open with a dominant third quarter. Kaitlyn Chen caught fire after the break, scoring all 14 of her points in the second half, while Kayla Thornton added 13 to keep the Storm at arm's length.

Gabby Williams, the Valkyries' marquee offseason addition, made a notable return to Seattle — where she played from 2022-25 — contributing seven points, six rebounds, and four assists.

The Storm fought hard behind Dominique Malonga's game-high 21 points and Zia Cooke's 15 off the bench. Rookie Flau'jae Johnson, the No. 8 pick in the WNBA draft, added 12 points but struggled from the field, shooting 3-of-12.

Seattle will have to adjust without starter Ezi Magbegor, who is expected to miss six to eight weeks with a right foot injury. The Valkyries also dealt with injuries, losing starter Tiffany Hayes (left pinky) in the first quarter and Cecilia Zandalasini (jaw) in the second — neither returned.

Golden State now heads home to open their home schedule Sunday against Phoenix, looking to build on an impressive debut.
