In a historic milestone for Black River basketball, all-state guard Jamison Huizenga is set to become the first boys basketball player from the school to compete at the collegiate level. Huizenga, who recently committed to MIAA champion Olivet University, is taking his game from the high school hardwood to college courts—a dream he admits he wasn't sure would ever come true.
"This means the world to me because I never knew if this dream would come true," Huizenga said. "It's cool to be the first basketball player from my school to play in college."
The senior's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. He made history earlier this year by becoming the first River Rat to earn all-state honors in basketball, landing on the Division 3 second team as selected by the Michigan Sportswriters. Huizenga also shattered the school's single-season scoring record, averaging 18 points and five assists per game. His explosive performance included a school-record 44 points in a single contest.
Standing at 6-foot-2, Huizenga brings versatility and scoring punch to the Comets, who captured the MIAA regular-season title last season. He'll join forces with another local talent, Conner Schipper, the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year at center. The connection to familiar faces was a key factor in his decision.
"I chose Olivet because of coach (Sam) Hargraves, the chance to play against Hope, and because of the local guys on their roster," Huizenga explained.
With his eyes set on helping Olivet defend its MIAA title, Huizenga is ready to write the next chapter—not just for himself, but for every young player at Black River who dreams of playing beyond high school.
