The numbers do back this up a bit.

When the NBA playoff schedule drops, fans immediately start analyzing everything—matchups, injuries, and of course, the referees. That's exactly what's happening as the Los Angeles Lakers gear up to face the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals. The name on everyone's lips? James Williams.

Williams, a 46-year-old NBA referee who has been calling games since the 2009-10 season, doesn't exactly have a fan club among Lakers supporters. And while blaming the officials can sometimes be a convenient excuse, the numbers do tell an interesting story.

Here's the stat that's raising eyebrows: The Thunder boast the fifth-best winning percentage (58.2%) in games Williams has officiated. Meanwhile, the Lakers sit with the ninth-worst winning percentage at just 45.9%. On the surface, that gap looks alarming.

But before we break out the conspiracy theories, context matters. Williams has been reffing for over 15 years, which means he's worked through very different eras for both franchises. The Lakers went through some tough rebuilding years in the 2010s, while the Thunder were consistently competitive with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. In other words, Los Angeles was often losing regardless of who had the whistle.

Digging deeper into the numbers, the foul calls actually paint a fairer picture. The shooting fouls and offensive fouls Williams has called on both teams are nearly identical. In fact, the stats round to the same numbers when looking at fouls called on each team's opponents. That suggests Williams has been more balanced than Lakers fans might think.

Still, in the heat of a playoff series, perception can be everything. And for a Lakers team already facing a powerhouse Thunder squad, the last thing they need is another distraction. Whether Williams' history matters or not, Los Angeles has bigger problems to solve on the court.
