Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. has agreed to enter a pre-trial intervention program that could allow him to avoid facing a felony trial, marking a significant turn in a case that has drawn attention across both the NFL and WNBA.

The agreement, which was confirmed by ESPN, comes weeks after Pearce was charged in connection with a February incident involving his ex-girlfriend.

Under the terms of the six-month program, Pearce must comply with a series of conditions, including undergoing therapy, submitting to random drug testing, and maintaining strict distance from Rickea Jackson. He is also required to follow league drug-testing policies and provide a written apology to law enforcement.

Any violations could result in his removal from the program and a return to the traditional court process. Pearce appeared at the hearing via videoconference and is expected to return to court in May to finalize the agreement.

Prosecutors supported the intervention route after consulting with Jackson and responding officers. According to a spokesperson for the state attorney’s office, all parties agreed the program was “the best way forward,” citing that Pearce has no prior history of violent offenses and that the incident appeared to be connected to a mental health crisis.

His legal team emphasized that he has already taken steps to address those concerns, adding in a statement that he is “committed to meeting all conditions” and focused on moving forward.

The case stems from a Feb. 7 incident in Doral, Florida, in which Pearce was accused of using his vehicle to repeatedly strike a car driven by Jackson as she attempted to reach a police station.

Authorities alleged he fled when officers tried to intervene, later crashing and attempting to escape on foot before being taken into custody.

He was charged with multiple counts, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated stalking, fleeing law enforcement, and resisting arrest.

In a separate court filing earlier this year, Jackson said she sought legal protection because she feared for her safety, writing that she believed Pearce “will kill me” if the court did not intervene.

A judge granted a temporary order of protection, restricting Pearce from contacting her or approaching her home, workplace, or vehicle.

The NFL has acknowledged the situation remains under review as part of its personal conduct policy. The Falcons have declined further comment while the legal process continues.

Pearce, the No. 26 pick in the 2025 draft, emerged as one of the league’s top rookies last season, recording 10.5 sacks for the Atlanta Falcons.
