James Harden promised to be better after Game 1. He wasn’t.

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ All-Star guard admitted following a tough loss to the Detroit Pistons that he needed to clean up his game—specifically, the turnovers. “I’ve got to be better and I will be better, not turning the basketball over,” Harden said after Game 1. But if Game 2 was any indication, that pledge hasn’t translated to the court yet.

On Thursday, the Cavaliers fell 107-97 to the Pistons, sinking into a 2-0 hole as the series shifts to Cleveland. The blame fell squarely on the 36-year-old Harden, whose postseason struggles have become an all-too-familiar storyline across multiple playoff stints. He finished with just 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting (0-of-4 from beyond the arc), adding 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 turnovers. One of those giveaways essentially sealed the win for Detroit.

The numbers tell a grim story through two games: Harden has more turnovers (11) than field goals made (9) or assists (10). He’s shooting a dismal 32.1% from the field and 9.1% from three-point range. And his defense? Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor called it “hilariously bad” in the first half, and a questionable exchange with Pistons forward Ausar Thompson only added fuel to the fire.

Every player has an off night, but this pattern is nothing new for Harden. In his 182nd career playoff game, it marked the 36th time he’s made three or fewer field goals—nearly 20% of his postseason appearances. Even more telling: it was the 46th time he’s had as many or more turnovers than made field goals, accounting for over a quarter of his playoff games.

The Cavaliers knew this history when they traded for Harden. Now, they’re hoping he can rewrite it before the series slips away.
