The Oklahoma City Thunder are riding high with a 1-0 series lead over the Los Angeles Lakers, but they'll have to keep rolling without one of their key players. Jalen Williams has officially been ruled out for Thursday's Game 2, marking his fourth consecutive playoff absence due to a hamstring strain.
Williams first suffered the injury during OKC's Game 2 victory over the Phoenix Suns two weeks ago, and he's been sidelined ever since. Despite his absence, the Thunder have found their rhythm, stringing together three straight playoff wins. Rookie Ajay Mitchell has stepped up admirably, emerging as the team's second go-to scorer alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
It's been a frustrating season for Williams, who has battled through multiple injuries. He played in just 33 regular-season games, missing significant time due to two wrist surgeries and two separate hamstring strains. That adversity, however, has forged a resilient Thunder identity—one built on winning basketball even without their All-NBA talent on the floor.
Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault revealed Wednesday that Williams has yet to participate in any high-intensity scrimmages, though he was recently spotted putting in work at practice. It seems the young star is still a ways off from returning, with his status remaining week-to-week.
Given Luka Doncic's absence from the Lakers lineup, the Thunder might not need Williams back for this second-round series. But if they advance to the Western Conference Finals or NBA Finals, that could be a completely different story—and a situation where his return would be crucial for their championship aspirations.
