Jakub Dobeš Is Becoming Playoff Hero for the Montreal Canadiens

There's something special brewing in Montreal, and his name is Jakub Dobeš. The 24-year-old goaltender is quickly turning into the playoff hero the Canadiens have been searching for. After a commanding 6-2 victory in Game 3 at the Bell Centre, Montreal finds itself just two wins away from the Eastern Conference Finals—a feat they haven't achieved since their memorable run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021. And if you're looking for the man behind the magic, look no further than the 6'4" netminder between the pipes.

It wasn't always a given that Dobeš would be the starter heading into the 2025-26 season. The Ostrava, Czechia native had to battle it out with both Sam Montembeault and top prospect Jacob Fowler for the crease. But once he earned the job, he never looked back. This season, Dobeš posted an impressive 29-10-4 record with a 2.77 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage. He also made history by becoming just the 10th rookie goaltender in NHL history to win his first six appearances, while setting a franchise record for the fewest goals allowed (4) in his first four career games.

Now, in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Dobeš is elevating his game even further. Through 10 starts, he's guided Montreal to a 6-4 record while posting a stellar 2.28 GAA and a .912 save percentage. But numbers only tell part of the story. It's the moments that define a playoff hero, and Dobeš has already delivered several.

Take Game 7 of the first round against the Tampa Bay Lightning, for example. In a classic David vs. Goliath matchup, the Lightning outshot the Canadiens by double digits. But Dobeš stood tall, stopping 28 of 29 shots to lead Montreal to a stunning 2-1 upset and a ticket to the second round. Then came Game 3 of the second round against the Buffalo Sabres. Despite the lopsided score, the Sabres threw everything they had at the Habs goalie. Dobeš answered the call once again, turning aside 26 of 28 shots to help Montreal grab a crucial 2-1 series lead. If he keeps this up, Buffalo might be looking at a short series.

While Dobeš wasn't a finalist for the Vezina Trophy this season, his playoff performance deserves just as much recognition. The top three goalies in the league are certainly deserving, but the Canadiens' rookie has proven he belongs in the conversation. If Montreal can maintain this level of play, they have a legitimate shot at making a deep playoff run—and ending a 33-year Stanley Cup drought.

At the end of the day, Dobeš would trade any individual award for a chance to hoist the Cup. And as the Canadiens continue their playoff journey, they'll go as far as their goaltender can carry them. So far, he's carrying them beautifully.
