Former Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns quarterback Jake Delhomme was the guest of honor at the 2026 UL Lafayette Spring Gala, and the moment clearly meant more to him than he ever expected.
"I heard about this honor about a year ago, and I was stunned," Delhomme shared. "I always thought that was for older people. But here I am at 51, with reading glasses everywhere and about to become a grandfather. I guess I've earned it."
For Delhomme, the university and its athletic program have been life-changing. "Sports was huge for my family," he explained. "My parents didn't have to pay for college because I earned an athletic scholarship. I took that responsibility seriously—it wasn't just about playing. Education was vitally important to me."
The former Cajun quarterback still lights up when recalling his biggest moments on the field. The 1996 upset victory over Texas A&M stands out, but it's not his only source of pride. "We played Louisiana Tech four times during my time here, and Tulane twice," Delhomme recalled. "That's six games against in-state schools, and we won all six. I take a lot of pride in that."
What truly makes Delhomme proud to be a Ragin' Cajun, however, is the people. Now working as a radio broadcaster for the Carolina Panthers, he travels extensively and meets fans everywhere. "Everyone always mentions our Cajun accent—I know I have one—but there's something special about the Ragin' Cajuns. People say it's our people. We're friendly, we love to have fun, and we're gritty. That's the Ragin' Cajun way."
Whether you're a lifelong fan or new to the culture, Delhomme's story is a reminder that Louisiana spirit runs deep—and looks great in team gear.
