In a candid and emotional revelation, former Green Bay Packers All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander has opened up about his decision to step away from the NFL last season, citing mental and physical health struggles that made the choice unavoidable. Writing in The Players' Tribune, Alexander described the move as one of the toughest—but most necessary—decisions of his career.
"Deciding to step away from the game was one of the toughest things I’ve ever had to do," Alexander shared. "But I absolutely did have to do it."
The announcement sheds light on what became one of the most surprising storylines of the 2025 NFL season. After being released by the Packers in June, Alexander was heavily recruited by Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and signed a one-year deal with the team. The hope was that a fresh start would help the once-dominant cornerback recapture the elite form that made him a household name in Green Bay.
Instead, injuries and inconsistency derailed that plan almost from the start. Alexander appeared in just two games for Baltimore, recording five tackles while struggling to stay healthy through training camp and the regular season. A tough outing against the Buffalo Bills was followed by extended stretches on the sideline—sometimes due to injury, other times as a healthy scratch.
Just before the NFL trade deadline, the Philadelphia Eagles acquired Alexander along with a 2027 seventh-round pick from Baltimore in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round selection. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman later admitted the organization understood the risks involved but felt the potential reward was worth it after thoroughly researching Alexander's situation.
The trade carried an extra layer of significance for Alexander, who was born in Philadelphia before moving to North Carolina as a child. Many saw it as a homecoming opportunity, but unfortunately, injuries continued to keep him off the field. Now, with his health and mindset as the top priority, Alexander is focused on what comes next—both on and off the gridiron.
