Jaire Alexander: I'll never say never about coming back

When Jaire Alexander stepped away from the Eagles last season, there was word that he planned to "focus on getting himself right physically and mentally before deciding on his future" as a player.

When star cornerback Jaire Alexander stepped away from the Philadelphia Eagles last season, the football world took notice. The two-time Pro Bowler had made it clear his priority was "focusing on getting himself right physically and mentally before deciding on his future" as a player. Now, in a candid essay for The Players Tribune, Alexander is opening up about that journey—and leaving the door open for a potential return.

Alexander's path to this point has been anything but smooth. After a seven-year run with the Green Bay Packers, knee troubles led to his release following the 2024 season. In his essay, he likened the end of that chapter to a "divorce"—a poignant description of how difficult the split was. He then signed with the Baltimore Ravens, but things quickly unraveled. A poor performance in a season-opening loss to the Bills left him "very, very embarrassed" and questioning his health. He played just one more game before Baltimore deactivated him to focus on recovery, eventually trading him to the Eagles.

The decision to step away without ever suiting up for Philadelphia came when his knee issues resurfaced, triggering familiar doubts about his ability to compete at an elite level. "I needed to listen to myself, and look out for myself, and put my well-being first," Alexander wrote. His essay details the steps he's taken since—both physically and mentally—and addresses the question every fan wants answered: will we see him back on the field?

"People still sometimes ask me if I'm ever gonna come back and play," Alexander shared. "And, you know what . . . I'll never say never — I still work out, and the knee's fine now, so I'm in good shape. But for me, right now, the most important thing really is just to be in a good place overall. To be happy."

It's a powerful statement from a player who, when healthy, was one of the NFL's most formidable cornerbacks. His play during his Packers heyday would certainly earn him a look from teams if he decides to make a comeback. But as Alexander makes clear, his priority isn't the game—it's finding peace. Whether that leads him back to the gridiron remains to be seen, but for now, he's focused on what matters most.
