Former Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander has opened up like never before, sharing a deeply personal account of his mental and physical struggles after leaving the team. In a heartfelt piece for The Players Tribune, the two-time All-Pro chronicles the painful journey that led him to step away from football—and the healing process that followed.

Alexander, who was released by the Packers before the 2025 season, had been battling a persistent knee injury that took a toll on both his body and his spirit. After a rough debut with the Baltimore Ravens and a subsequent trade to the Philadelphia Eagles, he announced in November that he was stepping away from the game. "People still sometimes ask me if I’m ever gonna come back and play," Alexander wrote. "And, you know what … I’ll never say never—I still work out, and the knee’s fine now, so I’m in good shape. But for me, right now, the most important thing really is just to be in a good place overall. To be happy."

The cornerback revealed that his departure from Green Bay began to feel inevitable early in 2025, when the team hesitated to provide him with an iPad for watching game film—a small but telling sign. "Not long after that, they got in touch about a potential pay cut," he wrote. "And, you know what … I understood. I was making a lot of money. I just got hurt. I had no problem with taking less money and having to prove my value again. But as we went back and forth, it just seemed like we could never get fully aligned."

For a player who had always envisioned himself as a Packer for life, the reality of potentially playing elsewhere was a heavy blow. Alexander acknowledged that the NFL is a business, but the emotional weight of leaving the only franchise he had known proved harder to handle than he expected. "After I got cut, I tried to pretend like it was no big thing, but I never really fully dealt with all the emotions I was feeling," he wrote. "What I’ve realized since, in working with my therapist, is that I needed to take a step back and focus on my mental health."

Alexander’s story is a powerful reminder that even the most talented athletes face battles off the field—and that sometimes, the bravest play is knowing when to take a timeout for yourself.
