From the brink of academy collapse to representing the United States on the youth international stage—Jai Bansoodeb's journey is a testament to how quickly fortunes can change in football.
Just a year ago, the 17-year-old midfielder faced an uncertain future as Sutton United's academy teetered on the edge of closure. "It was a scary possibility that I wouldn't have a club the rest of the season," Bansoodeb recalls. Fast forward to today, and he's not only completed his first season with Brentford Under-18s but also made his USA U17s debut and scored a stunning goal to clinch the Under-17s Professional Development League shield.
"If you had told me then that, a year later, I'd have been a first-year scholar at a Premier League club and made my USA debut, I wouldn't have believed it," he says with palpable disbelief.
His international call-up came as a complete surprise. Bansoodeb was initially told he'd have a Zoom call with the USA coach and scout, but he assumed it was simply a progress check on his development at Brentford. "Once they mentioned that they wanted to bring me to the next camp, it was such a good feeling," he remembers.
Born in Maryland to an American mother from New Jersey and a father from Mauritius and Trinidad, Bansoodeb has big dreams for his international career. His first camp with the U17s was eye-opening. "All the boys were nice, and it was a really high standard," he says. "It was hard for me as well because I'm not used to the humidity and heat. I had to adapt but I feel like I did well."
That experience has fueled his ambition. "Playing with the best boys in the country has given me real motivation. My biggest goal this year is trying to make the U17s World Cup squad in November."
Bansoodeb's talent was evident early on. He progressed through Chelsea's prestigious academy before his path took an unexpected turn. Now at Brentford, he's discovering new dimensions to his game—including a rare two-footedness that sets him apart. For a young player who once faced the possibility of having no club at all, representing the stars and stripes is a dream turned reality, and one he's determined to take as far as possible.
