The Jacksonville Jaguars are making a savvy veteran addition to their backfield, reportedly signing free agent running back Ameer Abdullah. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the move brings a seasoned playmaker to a relatively young position group.
Abdullah, a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts, appearing in 13 games. While his rushing numbers were modest—14 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown, averaging 4.3 yards per carry—he proved to be a reliable target out of the backfield. On 17 targets, he hauled in 16 passes for 99 yards, showcasing his versatility as a receiver.
Beyond offense, Abdullah contributed on special teams, handling kick return duties with an impressive 29.6-yard average on 19 attempts. His dual-threat ability adds depth and experience to a Jaguars running back room that currently features Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez, and LeQuint Allen atop the depth chart. Given that Jacksonville often rostered four running backs in 2025, Abdullah's arrival could bolster competition for a roster spot.
Over his 11-year NFL career, Abdullah has amassed 2,054 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground, while adding 219 receptions for 1,567 yards and 11 more scores. He has twice surpassed 500 rushing yards in a season, with stints in Detroit, Minnesota, Carolina, Las Vegas, and Indianapolis.
While contract details remain undisclosed, this signing signals the Jaguars' commitment to building a versatile and experienced backfield—a smart move for any team looking to stay competitive in the modern NFL.
