The Jacksonville Jaguars made a strategic move on Monday, signing veteran running back Ameer Abdullah from their AFC South rivals, the Indianapolis Colts. This acquisition adds depth and experience to Jacksonville's backfield while shaking up the Colts' roster plans.
Abdullah, 32, served primarily as a third-down back for the Colts last season, earning his role after being elevated from the practice squad in early September. His promotion came following an injury to fellow backup running back Tyler Goodson, and Abdullah quickly proved his value in both the ground game and as a pass-catching option.
In 13 games during the 2025 regular season, Abdullah recorded 14 carries for 60 rushing yards and a touchdown, along with 16 receptions for 99 receiving yards. Beyond his offensive contributions, the eight-year veteran was a reliable special teams asset, playing 39% of Indianapolis's snaps in that phase, including duties as both a punt and kick returner.
The Colts are clearly reshaping their backfield behind star running back Jonathan Taylor, opting for a younger approach. With Goodson already signing with the Atlanta Falcons, Indianapolis has seen both of its veteran third-down options depart in free agency. The team still has second-year pro DJ Giddens and added rookie Seth McGowan via a seventh-round pick, but neither has extensive experience in the receiving scat-back role that Abdullah filled so effectively.
This leaves a notable gap in the Colts' offensive scheme, as neither Giddens nor McGowan has demonstrated consistent comfort in pass-catching situations. While younger players can develop, it's a hole worth watching as training camp approaches. Also in the mix is second-year pro Ulysses Bentley IV, an undrafted rookie from last season who spent most of the year on the Colts' practice squad and will compete for a roster spot this summer.
For Jaguars fans, Abdullah's arrival brings a seasoned, versatile back who can contribute on all three downs and special teams—a valuable addition as Jacksonville looks to strengthen its depth chart heading into the new season. Keep an eye on how this AFC South rivalry move plays out on the field.
