Jacob Devaney, the 18-year-old Manchester United Under-21 captain, is turning heads in the Scottish Premiership with his loan spell at St Mirren. The young midfielder has become a key figure in Paisley during the second half of the season, starting 13 times and earning the trust of two different managers along the way.
It hasn't always been smooth sailing. After a tough 3-0 home defeat to Kilmarnock, St Mirren now sit four points adrift with just one game remaining—away to Aberdeen. That means relegation play-off tension is looming. But don't expect Devaney to flinch. This is a player who knows exactly what he wants.
Despite Manchester United's preference for him to go elsewhere, Devaney pushed for the St Mirren move on deadline day. "I had somewhere else lined up, which the club wanted me to pursue," he admits. "But when I heard about St Mirren, it was an opportunity I wanted to take. I've grown up having an eye on the Scottish league."
While some of his United Under-21 teammates have struggled for game time on their own loans, Devaney has been a regular starter. Interim boss Craig McLeish trusts him in the midfield engine room, just as predecessor Stephen Robinson did before departing for Aberdeen in March. That's no small feat for an 18-year-old in a physical league like the Scottish Premiership.
With Irish family connections, Devaney admits Celtic naturally caught his eye growing up. But for now, his focus is firmly on helping St Mirren avoid the drop—and proving he belongs on the senior stage.
