What separates good players from great ones? For Ja'Kobi Lane, the answer is simple: an insatiable hunger to improve. As the young receiver prepares to join the Baltimore Ravens, he's bringing a mindset that's as sharp as his route-running.
Some athletes reach the NFL and consider it the finish line. Lane sees it as just the starting block. In a recent interview, the former USC standout broke down exactly where he wants to get better—and his answer might surprise you.
"I don't think there's one certain area that I would say more than any other," Lane explained. "But, I think the top of the route releases, blocking downfield – they're all areas where I look to get better, as well as just the necessities, like catching the ball and basic route running."
This isn't the typical rookie talk. At just 21 years old, Lane already understands a crucial lesson that many veterans take years to learn: focusing too much on one skill can make you lose sight of the bigger picture.
"Once you start to prioritize one thing in your game, you kind of lose sight of other things, and that's one thing I don't ever want to do," he said. "Being able to stay loyal to my game and then prioritize everything, I think that's the way I'll still go."
The Ravens are getting a player who could easily coast on his natural talent. Instead, Lane is committed to the grind—working on his releases, his blocking, and the fundamentals that turn good receivers into great ones. For a team known for its physical style, that kind of maturity could make all the difference.
