BYU's newest basketball sensation has officially arrived in Provo, and the excitement is already building. Five-star freshman Bruce Branch III—the second-highest rated recruit in program history—has moved onto campus, started his first college classes, and is hitting the court with his new teammates.
The 6-foot-7 small forward out of Prolific Prep made his debut on "BYU Sports Nation" Monday, giving fans a glimpse into his transition and his sky-high expectations. Branch, who committed to the Cougars in March, is following in the footsteps of fellow standout AJ Dybantsa as the next potential NBA draft prospect to come through BYU.
So far, the classroom has been a welcome surprise. "I love it. It's a lot easier than I thought it would be," Branch said. "In high school, teachers like to say college is hard, don't take it for granted. But I'm loving it. It's real simple, and I'm getting all my work done."
Off the court, Branch is already embracing the BYU culture—including the iconic "Y" hike. "We were hiking the Y the other day. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. The legs were burning," he laughed. "But we decided we're going to hike every Saturday, it's like a little team bonding thing. Hopefully one day we get the whole team to do it."
Branch's charisma and connection with his teammates have been immediate. He credits his social skills to his biggest supporter: "Thanks to my mom. She's a social butterfly, so I learned everything from her. When it comes to talking to people and knowing people, it's really easy with me. Great personalities, great people, real respectful, real kind—the type of people I want to hang around."
For Branch, the decision to come to BYU was about more than basketball. "The reason I committed was because the basketball part is going to come, but in terms of just being around the right people and knowing that you're going to be a better person by hanging around those people, it really got me emotional. All the sacrifices I made, all the sacrifices my mom made especially."
With his talent, work ethic, and team-first attitude, Bruce Branch III is poised to become BYU's next basketball star—and Cougar fans, buckle up. As he put it: "It's going to be wild."
