Franklin Central's Rylan Hainje runs 110-meter hurdles in 13.09 seconds at Marion County meet, the No. 4 time in history of high school track.

In a scene more suited for a winter coat ad than a track meet, Franklin Central senior Rylan Hainje turned the Marion County boys championship into his personal highlight reel. With temperatures hovering at 60 degrees and dropping, and a biting 15 mph wind whipping through North Central High School, the conditions were far from ideal. But for Hainje, the cold was just another opponent to conquer.

Fresh off a late-arriving bus, Hainje didn't waste any time making history. In the 110-meter hurdles, he blazed to a time of 13.09 seconds—the fourth-fastest time ever recorded in high school track under any conditions. The wind, however, means his achievement comes with an asterisk. But in Indiana, where such jaw-dropping performances are rare outside of Texas, the mark is nothing short of legendary. Just 35 minutes earlier, he had run 13.19 in the trials, proving his consistency under pressure.

"He came with the mind-set—he got off the bus, ready to go," said Melinda George, his hurdles coach. "And I think that's what made the difference."

Hainje's dominance didn't stop there. He also set a meet record in the 300-meter hurdles (36.31), anchored the winning 4x400 relay team with a 48.0 split, and ran the second leg on a runner-up 4x100 relay squad. In total, he accounted for 38 of Franklin Central's 119.5 points, propelling the Flashes to their first Marion County title. Defending champion Lawrence North finished second with 108.5 points, while North Central took third with 107.

The victory was especially sweet given the competition. Lawrence Central's Evan Williams, an Indiana University signee who broke Hainje's state record in the 60-meter hurdles indoors, was forced to withdraw from the 200-meter final due to soreness. But on this chilly evening, Hainje was untouchable, finishing a full second ahead of Williams in the 110-meter hurdles.

For Hainje, the cold was no excuse—it was just another day at the office. "We practice in cold all the time. Literally, all the time," he said. "I'm pretty much used to it."

Whether the wind-aided times will stand the test of record books, one thing is clear: Rylan Hainje's performance at the Marion County meet was a moment of pure, historic brilliance. For track fans and athletes alike, it's a reminder that greatness can strike even when the weather doesn't cooperate.
