History was made on the pitch Friday night as two Savannah boys soccer programs punched their tickets to the GHSA state finals for the very first time. Both the Islands Sharks and the Savannah Arts Panthers delivered thrilling penalty-kick victories, sending their communities into a frenzy and setting the stage for championship glory.
At the Shark Tank, the atmosphere was electric as Islands battled Jefferson to a scoreless stalemate through regulation and two grueling overtime periods. With the game hanging in the balance, the Sharks turned to senior goalkeeper Larkham Reidlinger, a specialist in penalty situations, who replaced starter Isaac Schultz after his shutout performance. Jefferson struck first with a save, but when Reidlinger dove left to deny Andrew Sorah on the fifth PK, sophomore Andrew McLaughlin stepped up and slipped the ball past the keeper for the 4-3 win. "It wasn't the prettiest kick, but it got the job done," McLaughlin said. "We played a great game for two hours, and I'm just blessed to be part of this team." The Sharks, now 21-2, will face East Hall (13-8) at Duluth High School on Tuesday, May 12th, at 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Savannah Arts traveled to Columbus and took down the top-ranked team in Class 2A in sudden-death penalty kicks. After a 1-1 deadlock through regulation and overtime, the Panthers showed composure under pressure to advance. With a 16-6 record, they'll face region rival Pierce County (14-5) on Wednesday, May 13th, at St. Pius X in Atlanta at 7:30 p.m.
For Islands, the victory carried extra weight—Jefferson had knocked them out in the quarterfinals last year with a 1-0 defeat. This time, the Sharks' defense stood tall, and coach Justin Brantley's cool demeanor guided his squad through the storm. "This was special for us because we're the first team from Islands to ever make it to the state championship game," McLaughlin added.
