Islanders Star Rookie Schaefer Receives Prestigious Honor

The hockey world knew it was coming, but the surprise made it even sweeter. New York Islanders rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer was named the unanimous winner of the 2026 Calder Trophy as the NHL's Rookie of the Year—and he found out in the most heartwarming way possible.

While appearing on "GMA3" on Wednesday, Schaefer was caught completely off guard when his brother and father surprised him on set with the news. It was a fitting moment for a player who has leaned heavily on his family, especially after the passing of his mother, Jennifer, from breast cancer in February 2024 at age 56.

At just 18 years old—he turned 18 on Sept. 5—Schaefer tied the NHL record for single-season goals by a rookie defenseman with 23. He finished second on the Islanders in both goals and total points (59), while leading the team and ranking fifth in the entire league in average time on ice per game (24:41).

Selected first overall as a 17-year-old, Schaefer not only made the Islanders out of training camp but thrived under the immense pressure that comes with being a top pick from Hamilton, Ontario—just 50 miles from Toronto. His poise and production throughout the season made him a near-certainty for the award, but the voting was still historic: all 198 first-place votes from the Pro Hockey Writers Association went to Schaefer, giving him 1,980 points. He finished ahead of Montreal Canadiens forward Ivan Demidov, Anaheim Ducks forward Bennett Sennecke, and Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes.

"It's definitely an honor to see so many great names on that trophy," Schaefer told NHL.com. "It's definitely a dream come true. Obviously, Demidov and Sennecke, they're great players and they could have won it too. I think any of us could have won it, because we all had great years. It's definitely an honor and it's a privilege to have this trophy."

Schaefer becomes the fifth Islander to win the Calder Trophy and the third defenseman in franchise history to earn Rookie of the Year honors, joining Bryan Berard (1996) and Hall of Famer Denis Potvin (1974). He's also the first Islanders player to claim the award since teammate Mathew Barzal in 2018.

For a young player who has already shown remarkable maturity on and off the ice, this honor is just the beginning of what promises to be a stellar career—and a powerful reminder that sometimes the best surprises come from the people who have been there all along.
