After tying Brian Leetch’s historic goal-scoring mark, the standout blue-liner eyes the franchise's first rookie of the year honors since Mathew Barzal following a dominant, record-breaking season.

In a season that will go down in New York Islanders history, rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer has been officially named a finalist for the Calder Trophy. He joins Montreal Canadiens forward Ivan Demidov and Anaheim Ducks forward Beckett Sennecke in the race for the NHL's top rookie honor.

Schaefer made an immediate impact from the blue line, posting an impressive stat line of 23 goals and 36 assists for 59 points over the season. His ice time was nothing short of elite—averaging 24:41 minutes per game, he logged the 12th-most minutes in the entire NHL, matching the workloads of stars like Evan Bouchard of the Edmonton Oilers and Brock Faber of the Minnesota Wild.

But the numbers tell only part of the story. Schaefer's 23 goals didn't just tie him with Sennecke for the rookie lead—they also tied him with Washington Capitals defenseman Jacob Chychrun for second-most among all NHL defensemen this season. More historically, that goal total ties a legendary mark: the most goals by a rookie defenseman in NHL history, matching New York Rangers icon Brian Leetch.

His all-around game was equally impressive. Schaefer finished the season a plus-13 and ranked third among rookies in both assists (36) and total points (59), trailing only Sennecke and Demidov. On the power play, he was a force—his eight power-play goals tied for second among all NHL defensemen, just behind Tampa Bay's Darren Raddysh.

If Schaefer takes home the Calder, he'll become the first Islanders rookie to win the award since Mathew Barzal in 2017-18 and just the fifth in franchise history. For a team that prides itself on developing talent, this is a statement season.

With a record-breaking debut now in the books, the big question for Islanders fans is: what will Schaefer do for an encore? How many points do you think he'll put up next season?
