Islanders & NHL News: Rocky promotion, Schaefer Calder formality, Leafs lottery

The hockey world is buzzing after a dramatic NHL Draft Lottery that delivered some unexpected twists. The Toronto Maple Leafs, fresh off a widely criticized press conference introducing their new general manager, received an early gift from the hockey gods by winning the top pick this summer. It was a nail-biter—if just one lower-seeded team had won the first or second pick, Toronto would have slipped out of the top five, sending their high first-rounder to the Bruins under a top-five-protected trade. Instead, Leafs fans can breathe easy.

Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks endured more heartbreak. The San Jose Sharks snagged the second overall pick, marking their third consecutive year in the top two and fourth straight in the top four. Despite taking a big step forward this season, the Sharks' tanking efforts continue to pay off. And yes, that means the New York Rangers drop from third to fifth overall. Tough break.

In less surprising news, the Calder Trophy finalists were announced, and it's as expected: Matthew Schaefer is the clear front-runner, joined by preseason favorite Ivan Demidov and Anaheim Ducks standout Beckett Sennecke. The award, voted on by writers, seems like a formality for Schaefer at this point.

For Islanders fans, there's some coaching news to celebrate. Rocky Thompson, who led the AHL affiliate to a successful season, has been promoted to Pete DeBoer's NHL staff. Thompson previously served as an assistant with the Flyers, Oilers, and Sharks—where he overlapped with current Isles assistant Bob Boughner. He also briefly worked with DeBoer when both were in the Vegas organization. A solid addition to the bench.

As for the draft, the Islanders didn't get any lottery luck this time. They'll select 13th overall, a spot that produced Derek King and Dean Chynoweth back in the 1980s—which, as you might guess, was a long time ago. Still, there's plenty of talent to be found.

On the ice, the Colorado Avalanche are rolling. After exchanging early goals with the Minnesota Wild for the second straight game, Colorado took control and cruised to a 5-2 win, taking a commanding 2-0 series lead. The Avs are looking sharp.

Stay tuned—this postseason is just heating up.
